Skysports.com understands Preston are planning an ambitious swoop for Manchester United starlet Danny Welbeck.
Preston boss Darren Ferguson, son of United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, has admitted he could try and use his connections at Old Trafford to bolster his squad.
Welbeck is regarded as one of the best young prospects to come through at United in recent seasons and is tipped for a big future in the game.
The England Under 21 forward has made 11 appearances for his club this season, but the recent arrival of Mame Biram Diouf has pushed him down the pecking order in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans.
Wigan are also thought to be tracking Welbeck as they look to reinforce their attacking options before the close of the transfer window.
It remains to be seen if Sir Alex Ferguson would be willing to loan out Welbeck with his side still competing in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

He has proven to be a useful squad player and I am not convinced SAF would let him go on a permanent move. Maybe a loan deal, but not while we're involved in the Champions League. Hands Off Darren!
