Erik ten Hag sacked by Manchester United after two-and-a-half years as manager with side 14th in Premier League

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge as interim head coach while a permanent successor is recruited; Man Utd's new co-owners INEOS had backed Erik ten Hag in the summer with a contract extension until June 2026 but he leaves with the club lying 14th in the Premier League

What do you think?

The decision to sack Ten Hag by Manchester United's hierarchy has been described as "difficult and finely balanced".

However, it is understood that the decision by the club's board, made in the wake of the controversial 2-1 defeat at West Ham on Sunday, was unanimous.

Ruben Amorim is expected to be officially confirmed as Manchester United's new manager on Thursday, with his tenure starting during the November international break.

It is understood the Premier League club have paid Sporting an extra €1m (£840,000) over his €10m (£8.37m) exit clause for an early release from his notice period. There have been discussions around a nominal compensation for the coaching staff Amorim intends to bring to Old Trafford too.

It is anticipated he will sign two-and-a-half-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

Manchester United are counting the cost of making a managerial change after just nine league matches.

Erik ten Hag was dismissed in late October with the side floundering in the bottom half of the Premier League after just three victories.

Ruben Amorim was appointed earlier this month, but according to football finance expert Kieran Magurie, the total spend in carrying out the managerial change amounted to £21.4m.

According to Maguire, it cost United £10.4m to sack Ten Hag while they had to fork out another £11m to recruit Amorim from Sporting.

The news comes after United’s decision to put up the cost of all members’ match tickets to £66 for the remainder of the season was labelled “offensive” by the club’s leading supporters’ group.

Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) revealed the club had informed the fans forum that changes to certain ticket policies will take effect immediately “and that this price will apply for kids and over-65s as well as adults”.

United and Everton fans are set to stage a protest against ticket prices ahead of their Premier League clash on Sunday.
