United V Referees
#1
Heres a list of the top referees who have reffed united and how we have done with them.
Interesting to look through them.

Martin Atkinson
Manchester United league games 9
Man Utd Won 7 Drew 0 Lost 2
Yellow cards Man Utd 15 Opposition 14
Red cards Man Utd 1 Opposition 0
Penalties Man Utd 0 Opposition 0
“The referee's position to make a decision there was absolutely ridiculous. He can't see it … It was a bad decision, but what can you do? You lose faith in the refereeing sometimes. That's the way the players are talking in there. It was a bad one. That goal should not have been allowed.” - 8 Nov 2009 0-1 v Chelsea (a)

Mark Halsey
Manchester United league games 23
Man Utd Won 17 Drew 1 Lost 5
Yellow cards Man Utd 20 Opposition 32
Red cards Man Utd 1 Opposition 1
Penalties Man Utd 2 Opposition 2
“A more capable referee would not have sent Dwight [Yorke] off, realising the type of player he is” - 28 Nov 2000 1-2 v Sunderland (a)

Alan Wiley
Manchester United league games 25
Man Utd Won 13 Drew 6 Lost 6
Yellow cards Man Utd 39 Opposition 43
Red cards Man Utd 1 Opposition 3
Penalties Man Utd 3 Opposition 5
“He didn’t add on any time for the goal. He played four minutes and two seconds. He was also walking up the pitch for the second goal needing a rest. He was not fit enough for a game of that standard. He was taking 30 seconds to book a player. He was needing a rest. It was ridiculous” - 3 Oct 2009 2-2 v Sunderland (h)

Steve Bennett
Manchester United league games 30
Man Utd Won 21 Drew 4 Lost 5
Yellow cards Man Utd 53 Opposition 58
Red cards Man Utd 4 Opposition 5
Penalties Man Utd 4 Opposition 0
“The referee’s decided it’s a red card and I think he should look at it again really. He [Cristiano Ronaldo] has not touched the player, he’s not got near him” - 14 Jan 2006 1-3 v Manchester City (a)

Howard Webb
Manchester United league games 20
Man Utd Won 13 Drew 4 Lost 3
Yellow cards Man Utd 39 Opposition 41
Red cards Man Utd 2 Opposition 0
Penalties Man Utd 4 Opposition 0
“I think Howard Webb has a great chance to be the top referee but today was a big game for him and, at times, he favoured Arsenal. Their second goal came from him not giving a free-kick for a foul on Louis Saha on the far side. It should have been a foul for us” - 3 Nov 2007 2-2 Arsenal (a)

Peter Walton
Manchester United league games 8
Man Utd Won 6 Drew 2 Lost 0
Yellow cards Man Utd 8 Opposition 17
Red cards Man Utd 0 Opposition 0
Penalties Man Utd 1 Opposition 1
“That’s the disappointment because they [John O’Shea and Gary Neville] were both injured by bad tackles and the referee did nothing aboout it. I’m disappointed in that because you normally expect a really firm display from Peter Walton but not tonight” - 22 Apr 2009 2-0 v Portsmouth (h)

Chris Foy
Manchester United league games 12
Man Utd Won 10 Drew 2 Lost 0
Yellow cards Man Utd 13 Opposition 25
Red cards Man Utd 0 Opposition 2
Penalties Man Utd 3 Opposition 0
“[Michael Ballack] elbowed him [Patrice Evra] clearly. The referee’s in line and had a clear view so Ballack’s lucky. But he’s made a rod for his own back. He’d stopped the game twice already. The referee didn’t get it right today. You have to be consistent and he blew twice but not the third time” - 9 Aug 2008 2-2 v Chelsea (n) lost on pens

Mark Clattenburg
Manchester United league games 10
Man Utd Won 4 Drew 3 Lost 3
Yellow cards Man Utd 21 Opposition 21
Red cards Man Utd 0 Opposition 1
Penalties Man Utd 1 Opposition 0
Ferguson given a two-match ban for arguing with Clattenburg: “Some referees don’t like it. They don’t like the truth but I just told him how bad he was in the first half” - 24 Nov 2008 0-1 v Bolton (a)

Andre Marriner
Manchester United league games 5
Man Utd Won 4 Drew 0 Lost 1
Yellow cards Man Utd 20 Opposition 32
Red cards Man Utd 2 Opposition 1
Penalties Man Utd 0 Opposition 0
“It is a very difficult atmospher here [at Anfield]. There was a wounded animal aspect to the game and it affected the referee. Whether he had enough experience or not, I don’t know” - 25 Oct 2009 0-2 v Liverpool (a)

Mike Dean
Manchester United league games 21
Man Utd Won 15 Drew 3 Lost 3
Yellow cards Man Utd 20 Opposition 45
Red cards Man Utd 0 Opposition 3
Penalties Man Utd 7 Opposition 2
Ferguson is banned from the touchline for two matches after verbally abusing Mike Dean for awarding a Hull penalty and failing to send off Michael Turner: “It should have been at least a yellow card, in which case the player would have been sent off. It made a difference” - 18 Nov 2008 4-3 v Hull City (h)

Phil Dowd
Manchester United league games 13
Man Utd Won 7 Drew 1 Lost 5
Yellow cards Man Utd 15 Opposition 26
Red cards Man Utd 5 Opposition 0
Penalties Man Utd 0 Opposition 2
“Paul Scholes was sent off for a late challenge. How many late challenges were there in that game from Everton players? It was amazing. Everton knew it was a weak referee and they exploited that to the full. I don’t blame them. Right from the first whistle, there was no protection” - 20 Apr 2005 0-1 v Everton (a)

Can we have Peter Walton and Chris Foy to ref us more often? Unbeaten when they ref (so far, touch wood!).

It would be interesting to see the stats as a %age, though, to get a better comparison.
