Here it is: The Mail on Sunday is back on the Jose Mourinho return story and says that he only 'snubbed Manchester City's millions because his dream is to manage Manchester United.'

According to the newspaper, Mourinho, under contract until 2012 at Inter Milan, 'rejected discreet overtures from Eastlands some weeks ago...

But sources close to the Portuguese have indicated his Inter contract was only part of the reason for cold-shouldering City.

They believe Mourinho's ambition is to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson and
that, if he bides his time, the Old Trafford job will become conveniently available.'

Really? There's been absolutely no indication from Ferguson that he is considering retiring any time soon. But that's not stopping the Mail:

'But significantly, the Scot will be invited to make recommendations about his successor and has a lot of admiration for Mourinho, the
only other manager to win the Premier League in the last five years.'

Mourinho, maybe - who knows ?

I should imagine that United already will know who it is they want, even at this early stage.
The Glazers (with SAF) will, more than likely, have spoken of the inevitable happening and just whom it is they should be tracking as replacement.
With the kind of money they have invested in this club, I personally feel, they will have asked SAF before now for insight into his intentions, a time frame as to his future plans and for updates on a regular basis.
Also, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that SAF's management at Old Trafford, both past and present, has (and has had) a bearing (in some small way) on the level of interest the owners have (and have had) to pay on their vast borrowings.

Frankly, I'm quite surprised that Sir Alex didn't take on an assistant whom he could build to be his successor .
Carlos Queiroz, for me, was that successor. However, that seemingly was not to be.
Having said that, perhaps someone with fresh ideas, a mind of their own and a different slant on the game wouldn't be too bad a thing. (Just a thought)

One thing though is for sure. Who ever it eventually turns out to be, they will not be given the same freedom by the club that SAF rightfully earned, was granted and so effectively put to the best of use.
With that said, no major player in the managerial stakes would sign up unless they came here on their own terms.

So I just hope that we don't end up going through the rigmarole that followed the retirement of Sir Matt Busby. The search for his successor was long and hard and may not have finally ended with SAF if some had had their way, but thanks to the overextended patience of the United board SAF found his feet and Manchester United Football Club went on to reach the dizzy heights from where we now gaze down on all who would challenge.
