United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists he has not been told he cannot spend heavily in this summer's transfer window.

The Red Devils allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to join Real Madrid for a world-record fee of £80million in July as the Premier League champions finally agreed to sell.

It was thought that the profits generated from that sale would be used to reinvest, but the only significant expenditure has been on Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan.

Rumours have suggested that United's owners, the Glazer family, have prevented Ferguson from investing, but the Scot insists that is not the case.

"Pay no attention to the cynics who have suggested our owners have stopped us spending," he told United Review. "Believe me, it was purely a football decision.

"Maybe it is the Scotsman in me but I believe in value, even when I am spending someone else's money, and the asking price for players we were looking at just wasn't realistic.

"What you must remember is that we are working from a position of strength.

"We don't suddenly have to splash out to try and compete at the top."
market is mental at the moment.... wait till things cool down & people stop jumping on the gravy train to citeh!!!!
Fergie is clever unlike rafa and will wait till the market calms down before signing more players - 18 million fr glen johnson and 20 mill for aquillani - lmfao!!!
^^^^^^ hahahaha so true!
I hope we sign some more soon.
Then buy a midfielder fergie!!
Fergie should buy a couple of players (a midfielder and a striker)
As our masterful leader , Sir Alex has said , Vast expenditure isn't always the key to Football triumph . For example , a victory of huge stars wouldnt be as satisfactory as a title acquired by a team as one.
It's not the market that's crazy, it's teams making sides with cash pay through their noses. There's still many, many youngsters found on low prices and decent players who can go further with sides who'd happily accept 5mil but there's sides sadly who want to become rich by holding teams accounts hostage for the player.

The only way to stop it is teams said "no, we ca sign a equally good player for far less goodbye" and then go sign someone for half the amount.

Really, It's annoying that a lot of "starless" players are tagged 30mil.

Oh well,

Spot on, my friend. This, I suppose, is life. We would do the same if we were selling a car, or whatever. We'd hold out for the best price. It is annoying, but when there are teams who will run all over the 'smaller' clubs and just pay stupid amounts, then it will never go away.
SAF has pretty much been an excellent judge of character and player and has never been one to be held to ransom, despite having the Glazers in charge. He will wait for the market to quieten down. And anyway, we still have a strong squad. Gibson looked strong again when he came on as sub against wigan. We'll be OK in SAf's hands.
