'Manchester United striker, Wayne Rooney has been named the 'Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), player of the year'.
He has been in sensational form this season-and he staved off his competition, the likes of: Cesc Fabregas, Carlos Tevez and Didier Drogba, to collect the honour. It is United's fourth winner of the award in 'each of the past 4 years'.
Rooney said, "Its a great feeling to win the player of the year award, because it's voted for by the players', and its something I'm really proud of and it's a great honour."
"I remember coming here in 2005 and 2006 to win the Young Player of the Year award. I saw the players winning the main one and it's something I've aimed for since".
'Rooney, is the Premier League's top-scorer, with 26 goals to his name. he missed United's 3-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspurs, on Saturday with a groin injury sustained during training-there are doubts as to whether he will play for his club again this season-though he insists he could be back for United's final game of the season and has promised that he will be fit, to spearhead the country's World Cup campaign'.
Rooney is the first Englishman to win the award since Steven Gerrard in 2006 and he paid tribute to the influence of his United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has had on his career.
"Sir Alex, is a great
manager, who has really brought me on as a player since I joined
United. His hunger passes through to the players'. its great to see
that he's pushing 70 (years of age), and has'nt changed a bit. I'm
sure he'll be here for a long time yet". (me too Wayne!).
Congratulations from a KIWI girl and a well deserved honour too.
Cheers.

Sorry to dampen the mood after a good victory, but this seems to be latest bit of news coming in.
Most sites are currently getting updates on the rumor, but they're all quoting SAF, so once again its possibly true.
Quote:Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested Wayne Rooney is unlikely to play any further part in Manchester United's bid for the Premier League title.
Rooney, who has recently been struggling with an ankle injury, missed United's 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur after picking up a groin problem in training on Thursday.
United opted not to risk the striker against Spurs and Ferguson believes it may be at least two weeks before the England international is fit again.
Ferguson will continue to monitor his top scorer's fitness, although Rooney should certainly be back in time to be part of England's World Cup campaign.
Desperate to play
"It's difficult to say," Ferguson told Sky Sports when asked if Rooney would play again this season.
"Groin injuries are groin injuries and I think it will maybe take two or three weeks to be honest with you.
"We'll try and give him every chance, obviously, and Wayne will be desperate to play himself, so we'll just have to wait and see."
Patrice Evra was forced to come off during the second half against Spurs after being sick on the pitch and Ferguson confirmed some of his players had been suffering with illness.
However, the United boss is confident that the likes of Evra will be back in rude health in time for next weekend's trip to Sunderland.
He added: "We had a bit of sickness with two or three players today, but we've got eight days to recover, so hopefully we'll be okay.
"Evra just felt it yesterday, but he felt okay to play and it just happened. Maybe the heat brought it on a little bit, it was a warm day.
"I don't know what's happened, whether it's something he ate or is something going around the place."

Quote:MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will miss the rest of the Premier League season because of a groin injury but should be fit to play for England at the World Cup in June.
Rooney had only just recovered from an ankle injury when he hurt his groin in training on Thursday.
United manager Alex Ferguson said after Saturday's 3-1 victory over Tottenham that "it might take two or three weeks" for Rooney's groin injury to heal.
While that would rule him out of United's final two Premier League matches, it should not endanger his hopes of playing in England's World Cup opener against United States on June 12

Hello, I have just opened my 'RED VIEW' e-mail and I am really happy to have viewed Sir Alex's 'Press conference video, titled...
Boss: I'm going nowhere'.
There also appears to be "one or two doubts", for United, "ahead of Saturday's lunch-time clash with Tottenham Hotspur".
'Wes Brown and Rio Ferdinand' have both returned to training, and are available for selection.
Sir Alex, 'had hoped to also include Owen Hargreaves in his matchday squad...but the midfielder has missed the last 2 days training with a calf injury'.
Sir Alex is confident that his squad is up for the challenge, 'after last weekend's late derby win at Eastlands...'
He also says that, "There's been a lift, around the club this week, no doubt, there's always been a sense of atmosphere around the place, but in training, this week, it's been noticeable-the lift. Training has been competitive".
He goes on to add, "We just need to do our job and let Chelsea deal with their situation. We know we have to win, thats the important thing."
"Winning wont be easy, however. Spurs did United a huge favour by defeating Arsenal and Chelsea, in the space of 4 great days, but in their chase for a Champions League place, they now represent a major threat to the Reds' title hopes".
"This is the best Tottenham side of my time here", Sir Alex warns.
I am glad to see that those first team members' are being competitive with each other at training, as I am sure they are fully aware of how important this match is to their club, and to their fans/supporters both domestically and globally as well...(NZ...ME!) lol's
Cheers.
