in all fairness i think most people say it coz it shorter and its used in songs because it goes with the tune, just like what pompey sang at the f.a cup final, 'portsmouth city, we are the greatest team the world has ever seen, and its portsmouth city' etc.
They are not portsmouth city but it goes with the tune

i've known many united fans who are against the term man u, at least i know why now after all these years
