World Cup venues are required to have a capacity of at least 35,000 seats, which meant that one Russian stadium had to go through a drastic renovation to meet the requirement.

And it couldn’t look any scarier.

Ekaterinburg Arena in Yekaterinburg, Russia, had an initial capacity of 27,000. For the summer’s World Cup, it will welcome 45,000 fans to the venue for each match. The Russian Football Union accomplished such a feat by building a massive seating structure OUTSIDE the stadium. This is what it looks like:

Why is it so steep? NOPE.

Plus, World Cup tickets — even for group matches — are ridiculously expensive. Fans will certainly pay for those seats, but it doesn’t seem like a great value to spend a small fortune on seats that are technically outside the stadium.

There is no way that structure is a good idea.

Quote:The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has published changes to the laws of the game for the 2016/17 season, the most notable altering sending-off and cautionable offences inside the penalty area.

The previous 'triple-punishment' rule meant that a player who denied a goal-scoring opportunity was automatically red-carded and handed a suspension, as well as giving away a penalty.

However, the law has now changed so that players committing accidental fouls, that deny a goal-scoring opportunity, are not automatically sent-off, but cautioned instead.

Players will still be sent-off for holding, pulling or pushing, not playing the ball or having no possibility to play the ball, serious foul play, violent conduct or deliberate handball.

Referees' powers have also been extended so that they can send-off a player before kick-off, from the official's pre-match pitch inspection onwards.

Announced on Thursday, the new laws also state the ball will also be able to move in any direction from kick-off, rather than only move forward.

Players who are injured by a challenge punishable by a yellow or red card can now have quick treatment on the field, rather than having to leave, which previously gave the offending team temporary numerical advantage.

IFAB announced last month their intentions to change the laws following a comprehensive, 18-month review, led by former English Premier League referee David Elleray.

The IFAB unanimously approved the revision, which they identified as a 'once in a generation' opportunity to address anomalies and inconsistences in the laws.

The IFAB, the game's law-making body, also approved a two-year trial period of video technology to assist referees, to be used in four cases: to determine if a goal has been scored, red cards, penalties and mistaken identity.

6 People Arrested Over Match-Fixing

Quote:At least three footballers are among six people arrested by police in an investigation into match-fixing in Britain.

The operation is being conducted by the newly-formed National Crime Agency - which has been dubbed Britain's FBI - and is working closely with the FA.

Arrests followed an investigation by The Daily Telegraph into Asian match fixers who were targeting games in Britain.

A spokesman for the NCA said: "Six men have been arrested across the country as part of an NCA investigation into alleged football match fixing. The focus of the operation is a suspected international illegal betting syndicate.

"The NCA is working closely with the Gambling Commission and the Football Association. This is an active investigation and we are unable to provide further detail at this time."

In the undercover video recorded by The Daily Telegraph an internationally known fixer correctly predicts the results of three games played by the same team.

He claimed lower league matches could be fixed for as little as £50,000 and said he would pay a player an extra £5,000 to take a yellow card early in the game to signal the game had been manipulated.

The man, who met undercover reporters in Manchester, is reported to have planned to target two matches this month.

"The threat of corruption is something that The Football League and the other football authorities treat with the utmost seriousness. The integrity of our matches and our competitions is the bedrock of the domestic game."

Explaining how he would ensure players deliver a particular scoreline, he told an undercover reporter: "In England the cost is very high... usually for the players it is £70,000.

"So I talk to them. Double confirm. I also tell them, I tell ... this [is] what I want ... Because simple, I commit myself and they commit. So you tell me how many goals ... Give me at least five ... either 3-2, 4-0 or zero, ... for me four is enough."

It is not believed that any Premier League sides are involved in the scandal, but the identities of those clubs affected cannot be disclosed for legal reasons.

Asian-betting based websites are used by the fixers to place the bets, with the British betting markets not believed to be implicated.

However, as investigative journalist who has written a book on match fixing believes the problem the problem is spreading rapidly to Europe.

Declan Hill told Sky Sport News: "When I was watching (the secretly filmed footage) I was chuckling because I think I recognised some of the individuals concerned.

"The dialogue is entirely reasonable - the kind of thing you hear on a weekly basis from these kind of guys

"We're no longer talking about the occasional match - we're talking about a new phenomenon of globalisation of sports corruption.

"The music and the travel industry have been revolutionised by globalisation and so has sports corruption.

"It's rife across Asia, it's rife across Africa and it's coming into Europe in a serious way."

Both the Football Association and Football League responded to The Daily Telegraph's investigation.

An FA statement read: "The FA has been made aware of a number of arrests in relation to a National Crime Agency investigation."

Football League Chief Executive Shaun Harvey said: "We have worked closely with the authorities in relation to this investigation. The FA will make no further comment due to it being an on-going investigation."

"To date, we have had no contact from the Police regarding this matter.

"The threat of corruption is something that The Football League and the other football authorities treat with the utmost seriousness. The integrity of our matches and our competitions is the bedrock of the domestic game."

The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that it has liaised with the NCA during the investigation.

And then this was on the Telegraph website recently:

Quote:Football Association accused of failing to act over Conference South match-fixing investigation

The Football Association has come under fire for failing to question three Conference South clubs after bookmakers stopped taking bets in the wake of suspicious betting patterns last season.

The Football Association has come under fire for failing to question three non-league clubs about suspicious betting patterns on matches last season.

Bookmakers stopped taking bets on a number of Conference South matches involving Billericay Town, AFC Hornchurch and Chelmsford following irregular betting activity, a BBC investigation found.

The FA told clubs to "remind players and officials of their responsibilities under the rules", but all three club chairmen told the BBC none of them have been questioned over the affair.

Former head of the FA's compliance unit, Graham Bean, described the governing body's failure to contact the clubs was "disgraceful".

He told the BBC: "It is my belief that the FA tend to stick their heads in the sand at suggestions of match-fixing and tend to give a perception that they don't think it actually exists.
"When I was at the FA, I once raised the idea of having an intelligence hotline where anonymous contact could be made to report wrongdoing. I was laughed at for the suggestion."

The investigation found that hundreds of thousands of pounds was gambled on Billericay's match at Welling in November - the vast amount on Asian betting exchanges - despite only 408 spectators attending the fixture.

Billericay Town chairman Steve Kent told the BBC: "It was a phenomenal amount of money.

"There was more money bet on our game than on the Barcelona game [that week]. That's where the story came from. The FA and the league picked up on that but they did nothing about it.

"If there is a problem, let's sort it out, get rid of it and move on. The FA are the only ones that can do it really - they have the power."

He added: "I am calling for the authorities in this country to investigate the possibility of match-fixing at our level of football.

"How can they investigate alleged match-fixing involving my club when not a single person from the police, the FA, or the league made any kind of approach to us whatsoever? It's amazing."

An FA spokesman said: "The FA takes the matter of integrity extremely seriously. The FA does not confirm any details of investigations or enquiries made, or indeed whether they are ongoing."

Manchester City deadline day signing Owen Hargreaves is relishing a fresh start with his new club.

Hargreaves is now looking to put the past behind him and get back to playing after signing a one-year deal at the Etihad Stadium.

Regarding his injury problems, the 30-year-old told City TV: "It's difficult for people from the outside looking in. You would think ' there's something gone wrong there, the guy's made out of glass'.

"So I'm just happy that that chapter is behind me and I'm looking forward to just playing football and having fun, having a good time, joining in with the lads and competing again.

"Its difficult when you're in it and you're trying to find a solution to these things, you seem to be not going any further forward and it was incredibly frustrating.

By katie lambeski
So if you believe all the news after last weekend’s round of English Premier League, you would believe that the competition is just about done.

It is between the reigning championss Manchester United and their noisy neighbours, Manchester City. For mine, this title race looks a very exciting one and hopefully will be a season to remember for a very long time.

This year’s league can be won by three teams, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool; yes in that order. Chelsea can also possibly be in the mix.

Let’s start with the supposed winners already; Manchester United.

If you compare last season’s best XI to the one that took on Arsenal, it is a very different team. This season, players like Ash Young, David de Gea, Phil Jones, Tom Cleverley (back from Wigan) and Danny Welbeck (back from loan at Sunderland) have come in.

All have had an impact, early on in this season. Cleverley has been compared to Paul Scholes by Sir Alex, Ash Young looks to have fit perfectly into the team and Welbeck and Rooney look like forming a great partnership up front.

De Gea, on the other hand, looks far less certain of himself in the posts. He will grow into the position, but will take time.

This Manchester United side keeps on rebuilding, with change going through the playing ranks.

The Red Devils are probably the team to beat this season. They are going to be very hard to beat, particularly at Old Trafford.

Manchester City is definitely up there in terms of challengers for United’s crown. As expected, they have spent quite a lot in the summer transfer window, with huge signings in Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri.

They look to have added that extra, attacking edge into the side. That was desperately needed as City weren’t all that exciting to watch last season and they needed that attacking flair. With Nasri, Silva, Dzeko and Aguero in their front third, that is a very silky and creative side.

All of this leaves Carlos Tevez in a strange position. After the start they have had, he is not in their best XI. But you can do worse than having Carlos Tevez coming off the bench.

Add some strong defence in Kompany, Lescott and Yaya Toure and you have a well-balanced side and one that can chop and change the way it plays.

I’m expecting Man City to really push their neighbours for top spot.

Also a team, hard to forget is Liverpool. I think they can win the Premiership this season. They seem to have regrouped and rediscovered themselves under King Kenny.

They have gone back to the future in a sense with bringing back Dalglish. It was a great move from the new American owners.

Also important is that they have spent up this year. Suarez and Carroll joined in January, now Stuart Downing, Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Jose Enrique and Craig Bellamy signed up in the transfer window.

They have shown some attacking flair and Suarez has been at the forefront of it and with the work-horses Dirk Kuyt, Andy Carroll and Steve Gerrard in there, they can score a few goals this season.

Another important thing is the players look genuinely happy out on the field, and with Anfield behind them, they can win it.

Chelsea is another team that will be up there as the season goes on, but I doubt they can win it. They have also started slowly.

However, if you collect enough points early, you can set yourself up for a challenge for the Premiership. If you are a red or blue Manchester fan, well you wouldn’t be too worried about Chelsea. I haven’t seen anything to start the season to think otherwise.

Andre Villas-Boas has just came in and he has get to them to play the way he wants them to play. The biggest headache he will have is what to do with Torres and Drogba? He needs to sort that out if Chelsea are going to be play any part in the race this season.

I hope Chelsea and Abramovich give Villas-Boas the time needed to make the team his own.

North London isn’t in the best shape at the moment. Arsenal have had a very poor start, on and off field. They lost Nasri and Fabregas and were thrashed 8-2 by Manchester United. It is doubtful if they make top four.

However, they have finally invested a bit of cash in the side, with Andre Santos, Per Mertesacker and Mikel Arteta joining yestrerday.

Where has it been all summer? Who knows. They aren’t that bad a side on paper, but the Gunners just don’t have that discipline needed to fight when needed.

They are in for a long season. As are Tottenham. They have gone backwards. They haven’t bought any players, which is a statement in itself.

Modric is unhappy and they’ve lost Pete Crouch. I hope they prove me wrong because I love the style of football they play and I hope they can charge at top four, but I doubt it.

It looks to be a great season. Bring on this weekend.

Bring on this weekend.

by Sam Limbert
After the Manchester United match, it was clear that we had to act in the transfer market. In the last two days before the window shut, it was a case of ‘better late than never’ as Arsenal managed to sign five players to bolster the squad after a poor start to the season.

Regular followers of the Arsenal will know that it takes a lot for Arsene Wenger to part with significant amounts of cash, so, regardless of player sales, to see Wenger part with over £50m in one transfer window is unheard of. Unfortunately, a lot of it was spent late, meaning our squad has looked seriously thin over the last couple of weeks, with the lack of strength and depth hideously exposed in the humiliation at Old Trafford.

As much as the 8-2 was horrific and painful to watch, the happenings at the club on Tuesday and Wednesday might not have been so extreme had we not been so badly thumped. At best, I was hoping for three players to arrive after the Manchester United debacle, however five arrivals represented good work from the club.

It’s hard to know whether there were instructions from those above Arsene Wenger to go for it in the last few days and just sign anyone, or if the manager consciously and deliberately changed his stance in the transfer market. If it’s the latter, then questions will inevitably be asked why it took Wenger so long to make significant moves. Also, it could be argued that we missed out on other targets such as Juan Mata and Gary Cahill because we waited so long. As we proved yesterday, a transfer doesn’t have to take long to complete.

However in fairness to Wenger, he predicted that there would be a lot of movement in the final days of the window and that Arsenal as a club would be active with players going in and out. Over the whole summer, we have seen significant numbers leave and arrive at the club. It’s just a shame the arrivals have come late, but finally the squad looks big enough again in size.

Despite being so keen to develop youth, all of Arsene Wenger’s five signings this week are at least 26 and two have a wealth of Premier League experience. The other three are all full internationals and two are international captains. The last couple of days have given me an image in my head of Arsene Wenger dashing round a supermarket before closing time and filling his trolley with anyone he could. However, given the apparent haphazard and panic-buying nature of his late window shopping, I think Arsene and the club have done very well with who ended up in the trolley, and the money subsequently paid at the till, albeit the rush was partly of the club’s own making.

I’m going to briefly assess those who finished at Arsenal after Arsene’s trolley dash.

Chu-Young Park arrived on Tuesday, and will probably become Robin van Persie’s understudy as the main striker. Signed to replace Nicklas Bendtner in the squad, until van Persie suffers his big injury this season, I think Park will mostly be used off the bench. Having not watched much of Monaco last season, it’s hard to comment on his quality, but from the clips I’ve seen, he always looks hungry to score. I’ll think he’ll always work hard for the team as he tries to make the most of his two and a half years at the club. At the moment, he’ll have to go off to military service in Korea in 2013, so could be seen as a more short term option for the club whilst youngsters like Benik Afobe and Joel Campbell continue to develop. Although Monaco were relegated from Ligue 1 last season, the fact the winners of that division, Lille, were interested, shows that Park was well thought of in France. At around £3million, he is definitely cheap enough for an international captain, and hopefully someone that scores important goals.

After selling Armand Traore, we were left with just one left back in Kieran Gibbs, who is already injured this season. Wenger went out and spent just over £6million on Andre Santos from Fenerbahce. He excites me as a signing. Having been mentored by Roberto Carlos while playing in Turkey, I think we could have got ourselves a great bargain in Santos. He’s got 22 international caps with Brazil and has Champions League experience. He’s also 28, old for a Wenger signing. I think the big question mark over Santos will be his defensive ability, as he is clearly good going forward, and has an excellent goal scoring record for a defender. Initially, he could be targeted by opposition teams to see what he’s made of, but I think he’ll cope well. Also, there is something special about having an attacking full back. That was an element missing from Gael Clichy’s game, but is clearly a strong part of Santos’. The days of long range screamers from Nigel Winterburn and Silvinho were fun, so hopefully Santos can contribute some entertaining strikes.

On the last day of the window, after fans had been desperate for one for almost a year, we signed a centre back. Per Mertesacker was brought in for less than £10million from Werder Bremen. While we might look weaker in midfield than we did at the end of the last season, the defence is undoubtedly stronger. At 26, he has plenty of time left to develop further and potentially have his best years at Arsenal, but he’s coming to the club with a lot of experience. He’s played in the Champions League and has 75 international caps for Germany. He should improve our defending of set pieces due to his height, although critics are sceptical about his pace. Hopefully he’ll form a good partnership with Thomas Vermaelen, leaving Laurent Koscielny and Johan Djourou as back up. Unless there are a lot of injuries at the back, which is always possible at Arsenal, I can’t see how Sebastien Squillaci will get a match. Mertesacker is tall, experienced, could get better and was cheaper than Gary Cahill. All in all I think he is a quality signing.

At one point during the evening on deadline day, it looked like Yossi Benayoun would be our only midfield signing. Having lost Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, we were looking thin and lacking in creativity in the middle. Benayoun has been signed on a year’s loan from Chelsea, and arguably his signing shows a change in policy and some slight desperation. Some will say that signing a Chelsea reject shows the club is going in the wrong direction, that we’re relying on a player not wanted by the Blues to overtake them and those above them. If he’d been our only midfield signing and responsible for the majority of the creativity in midfield, then I’d have been worried. But as he wasn’t, he’ll be a good squad player that can do a job for the team on the wing or in the middle. At 31, he’s experienced and has played in the Premier League since 2005. He isn’t as dynamic as Nasri, but can definitely open up a defence. Of the five new players, he is the signing I’m most dubious about, but I’m ready to be proved wrong. He reminds me slightly of Alexander Hleb, so hopefully he’ll have a better end product than the Belarusian.

Our final, and probably most dramatic, signing of the transfer window was completed just moments before the deadline. Mikel Arteta joined the club from Everton for £10million, despite a similar sized bid being initially rejected by the Toffees. He’s 29, and won’t need very long to settle in as he is tuned into the Premier League. Unlike most Wenger signings, given he’s already 29, there will be little sell on value, so he’s been signed purely for footballing reasons. There will be a lot of pressure on him to play in the ‘Cesc role’, and obviously there’ll be comparisons with our former captain. I don’t think he’s as good as Fabregas, there aren’t many that are, but given the transfer situation we were in, I think he’s about as good as we could have got. He brings creativity to the team and can advise and guide younger players such as Ramsey and Wilshere. Like Benayoun, he probably won’t be the long term holder of the attacking midfield position, but he’ll do a fantastic job there before Ramsey is ready. He’s openly admitted he was attracted to the club by Champions League football, making the win in Udinese last week look even bigger. It’ll be interesting to see how he copes in that competition, but in the Premier League I think he’ll prove to be a good buy at £10million.

Without injuries, our first choice XI now looks quite strong: Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Santos, Arteta, Song, Wilshere, Walcott, van Persie and Gervinho.

As much as we shouldn’t have left the signings so late, and that deadline day as a concept is quite artificial, Tuesday and Wednesday did at least get some sort of smile back on the faces of Arsenal fans. It has built up some excitement again about the team with the anticipation of seeing new players (players that want to be at the club) wear the red and white. Whether it was panic buying prompted by the 8-2 or not, Arsene Wenger has brought in experience. Even though that was a surprise, it was still done in a Wenger way as he went for some unexpected players, and got them at good prices. There wasn’t one blockbuster signing amongst them with exceptional quality, but all look like solid players that’ll work hard and do a job for the team.

It remains to be seen on the pitch if the new additions are a success or not, but I think they look good at the moment as Arsene pushes his full trolley out of August.

Oxfam's East Africa famine appeal has been announced as the main beneficiary of The Legends Celtic vs Manchester United charity match on August 9.

The drought in this area has already caused devastation and was officially declared a famine in two regions of Somalia by the United Nations on Wednesday 20th July 2011.

The Celtic Charity Fund has taken the decision to make Oxfam’s East Africa Famine Appeal the event’s main charitable beneficiary. With ITV 4 broadcasting the match live from Celtic Park, stars from football and entertainment will be out in force at Celtic Park to back the campaign.

Judith Robertson, Head of Oxfam Scotland, said: "East Africa is facing the worst food crisis seen anywhere in the world for many years – almost 12 million people are at risk right now. Oxfam is there, and we’re already making a huge difference, but we need fans of Celtic, Manchester United and football fans across the world to rally together and help us to do even more.

“The Legends Celtic vs. Manchester United match is going to be an incredible night, and it’s fantastic to see so many players – past and present – and famous fans getting involved. Thanks to them, and the support of the fans, every minute of the match will help us raise money to save lives across Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.”

Legends of both clubs and the entertainment world will be taking part in the match. Already confirmed are players such as Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton, Dwight Yorke, Gordon Strachan, Patrick Kielty, Richard Ashcroft, Ricky Hatton, Nigel Benn, Angus Deayton, Ricky Whittle and Nicky Byrne. Billy Connolly, the Patron of the Celtic Foundation, will be at Celtic Park on the night, and a host of other confirmed as lending support to the event and the fundraising effort are Wayne Rooney, Rod Stewart, Eddie Jordan, Sharleen Spiteri, Dougray Scott and Paolo Nutini.

The line up has swelled further this week with the addition of Manchester United hero Roy Keane. For Keane – who made 326 appearances for Man Utd scoring 33 goals – the return to Celtic Park will bring back memories of his final season as a player. He returns to Celtic on the eve of his 40th birthday and will surely be looking for a victory to put the icing on his celebrations. The former Ireland international played 10 times for Celtic FC in the 2005/2006 season before retiring on medical grounds.

Truly deserving of his place in The Legends, Alex Ferguson has said of Keane: “Over the years when they start picking the best teams of all time, he will be in there.”

Exec producer Lester Holcombe said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have secured Roy to play. For many of the fans he’s the greatest midfielder that Man Utd ever had. He never took any prisoners and we’re fully expecting him to bring that same competitive edge to this game.”

Celtic manager Neil Lennon said: "This is a great cause and one we should all support. The charitable spirit and generosity of our supporters is well known and we’re sure our fans will once again lend their backing to support the many thousands of people in Africa who need our help.

“The images from Africa which we are seeing daily are heart-breaking and this is a cause everyone at the Club is fully behind. It’s fantastic that so many people are committing their time and support to this event. We’re sure the evening will be a great success and we look forward to welcoming as many supporters as possible.

Peter Lawwell, chief executive of the club, said: “We will be hoping to do all we can to raise as much as possible for this cause. We thank everyone involved taking part and all our fans for their support as we aim to make a difference.”

The match is the 9th game produced by the Legends for live broadcast in the UK and internationally. These matches have raised hundreds of thousands for charity and are watched by millions of people worldwide.

The match takes place on August 9 at Celtic Park in Glasgow. Tickets are now on general sale priced £10 Adult and £5 Concession. Call 0871 226 1888 or visit the Celtic Ticket Office.

Apart from David Silva, Roberto Mancini's men were below par and frustrations in the stands were already becoming apparent before Richards rose to power home Silva's 73rd-minute corner to overcome a plucky Reading outfit.
"We've not brought anyone as a replacement for anyone else," Reds boss Dalglish revealed on Monday.
Meanwhile, BBC Sport understands that Liverpool have had a £30m bid rejected for Newcastle striker Andy Carroll.
The future of Torres remained uncertain with the transfer deadline ending at 2300 GMT on Monday, with BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan reporting over the weekend that Liverpool would be willing to offload the 26-year-old for £50m to Chelsea.
An Anfield source also stated that the club could be open to a deal of £40m in cash plus Blues forward Nicolas Anelka.

Quote:Newcastle striker Andy Carroll is keen on a proposed move to Liverpool, BBC Sport understands.

Liverpool have made a second bid for the 22-year-old after their initial £30m offer was rejected by the Magpies.

Carroll has scored 11 goals in 19 league games this season and made his full England debut in November's 2-1 defeat by France at Wembley.

Liverpool have agreed a £23m fee for Ajax striker Luis Suarez but could be set to sell Fernando Torres to Chelsea.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was due to hold his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday's Premier League trip to Fulham at the club's training headquarters at 1400 GMT.

However, it was initially put back to 1530 GMT at St James' Park before being cancelled.

Academy graduate Carroll played a key role in the Magpies' promotion from the Championship last season and has continued to shine since being handed the number nine shirt during the summer.

I think he is a good player but £35million+ that is a massive waste of money!!!

Quote:Ipswich Town have sacked manager Roy Keane after 20 months in charge.

The club have suffered seven losses in nine games and the 1-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest on Monday left the club 19th in the Championship table.

First-team coach Ian McParland will take charge of the side in Sunday's FA Cup tie against Chelsea.

"I am hugely disappointed to be leaving Portman Road," admitted 39-year-old Keane in a statement through the League Managers Associaton.
"When results aren't good the manager gets the sack, that's the game.

"However, I have a genuine belief that we were making progress and that the players have what it takes to turn this season around."
Ipswich, backed by multi-millionaire Marcus Evans, have invested £8m on players during Keane's reign.
The former Manchester United midfielder led Town to the semi-final of the Carling Cup where they will play Arsenal.
The first leg of their last four clash against the Gunners is due to take place at Portman Road on Wednesday, 12 January.
