English clubs face a "battle to qualify for European competition" in future under regulations this week rubber-stamped by UEFA's executive committee, with sides involved in the continent's premier competitions only allowed to spend what they earn from 2012.

Clubs will still be permitted to have large debts, but only if they can service the interest payments as part of their overall spending.

Quote:"The new rules would threaten the participation of Manchester City, who made a £93million loss last year, in European competition as well as Chelsea - who made a £47m loss - unless they change their spending habits. "

But Manchester United insist they will pass the new UEFA 'financial fair play' test, despite making a £93m loss last year.

Q: What are UEFA's financial fair play proposals?

A: UEFA have decided that all clubs who want to play in European competition can only spend what they earn.

Q: Does that mean if any club makes a loss they are barred from European competition?

A: Not exactly - they have to show they are breaking even over a three-year period. There is also some flexibility with losses of up to £38million over three years allowed from 2012-15, and then £26m over a three-year period from then.

Q: What do the financial fair play rules say about debt?

A: The rules will not outlaw debt, but they do insist that any interest payments are taken into account when working out spending against income.

Q: Which Premier League clubs have most to fear?

A: Manchester City, who made a £93m loss last year, and Chelsea who made a £47m loss. Arsenal and Tottenham are fine, while Manchester United say they will pass the test, while Liverpool could do so too.

Q: What about clubs in the rest of Europe?

A: Barcelona do have big debts - around £420m - but they have been able to service them. Real Madrid's position is unclear - they say their debt is less than £300m, while some analysts put it at £609m, which would cause them problems passing the test.

Q: Who will actually decide which clubs have passed the financial fair play rules?

A: The Football Association and Premier League initially will issue the licence to English clubs. An independent panel appointed by UEFA called the Clubs Financial Control Panel will make spot-checks to ensured the rules are being adhered to.

Q: What about 'sugar daddies' such as Sheikh Mansour at Manchester City - can they write off the club's losses?

A: No, because that would be seen to be an unfair advantage. Rich benefactors will be allowed to invest in the fabric of clubs however, such as building new stadiums or academies.

Defeat in the Champions League at home to Manchester United has sparked speculation that Milan patron Silvio Berlusconi is unhappy with the Brazilian.

“Our agreement was very clear,” insisted Leonardo. “The plans were laid down and I have no problems. If the President wants, I will step aside. All I need is the word.
“I have been here for 13 years in one role or another, so I’d have no problem terminating the contract. I would never allow this club to pay for two Coaches at once.
“In order to keep going forward, we need the most important thing: calm. For now I am focusing only on the squad.
“I remain relaxed, although I know these rumours cannot do the team any good. It’s not harming them either, as it’s a mature group of players, but I’d prefer to avoid this sort of thing.”

CSKA Moscow face an anxious wait to learn if they will be thrown out of the UEFA Champions League and banned from future competitions because of positive drugs tests for two of their players following a match against Manchester United.

Russian defenders Alexei Berezutsky and Sergei Ignashevich have been provisionally suspended from all games after positive doping tests for a banned stimulant.

CSKA progressed into the competition's next round on Tuesday night as they won in Besiktas and Manchester United beat Wolfsburg.

The random tests were carried out following the Champions League clash with Manchester United on 3rd November which ended in a 3-3 draw.

Uefa's disciplinary committee will hear the case on 17th December but under the European body's regulations, if more than one player tests positive for banned drugs action can be taken against the team.

Part of Article 12 of Uefa's disciplinary regulations states: "If more than one player from the same team is charged with a doping offence in relation to a prohibited substance or methods the team in question may be disqualified from the competition in progress and/or future competitions."

The Russian club have defended the players and claim it was down to a "clerical error".

CSKA claimed that both players had been given Sudafed while battling colds on international duty, but CSKA's medical staff had failed to include the medication on a list handed to Uefa following the clash with United.

"The problem is that during the doping control procedures a clerical error was made by employees within our medical staff," said the statement on www.pfc-cska.com.

"For the players and for the club this news was truly shocking.

"Unfortunately, we do not yet fully understand all the circumstances of the case, but we have nothing to hide, and we believe our fans should be made aware of that.

"This situation has arisen in connection with the treatment of our players from a severe cold during their time with the national team, and not in any way with doping, which is also known by the relevant bodies within UEFA."

I wonder if they do get a ban, which they won't know until the day before the draw, whether the other teams in our group will then get promoted? That could mean Wolfsburg qualify for the CL and Besiktas to the Europa league?

1 player would probably mean a player ban, but 2....?

A Spaniard who describes himself as a professional warlock claims to have been hired to cast a spell on the former Manchester United footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.

Jose “Pepe” Ruz, 58, from Malaga, has written to Florentino Pérez, the president of Real Madrid — the club that paid £80 million for the Portugal international — to warn him that the hopes of millions of fans are about to be dashed. “I have been contracted so Cristiano Ronaldo suffers a serious injury. I can’t promise when that will be, but I can say he will be injured for more time than he plays,” he wrote.

Speculation has abounded in Spain over who might have taken out a black-magic contract on the star. Was it Sir Alex Ferguson, his former manager at Manchester United? Or Joan Laporta, president of Real Madrid’s rivals, Barcelona? Neither is a known practitioner of the dark arts — so is it one of the hapless defenders who will have to face Ronaldo in the coming season? Mr Ruz refused to name his client, other than to say that he or she was “famous and knows the player”.

Mr Ruz claims to have practised witchcraft for 22 years; a calling for which he says he is well paid. This time, however, he will have his warlock work cut out: the Portuguese winger has already scored seven goals in five games for his new club.

Real Madrid dismissed the threat. “It is a nonsense, like many things we have to deal with regularly,” a spokesman said.
