Timesofindia.indiatimes.com
John Terry believes the emergence of a young crop of international players augurs well for England's future but has rejected comparisons to the so-called "golden generation."

Ten years ago this weekend England looked poised to usher in a bold new era under Sven-Goran Eriksson when a youthful side featuring the likes of Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard and David Beckham thrashed Germany 5-1 in Munich.

That result ultimately proved to be yet another false dawn for England however, as what had once appeared to be a potentially world-beating group of players endured serial disappointments in major tournaments.

Just over a year ago, and English football hit rock bottom when Fabio Capello's side were dumped out of the 2010 World Cup by Germany, crashing to a 4-1 defeat after a string of abject displays in the group stage.

Yet, improbably, a more optimistic mood has developed around the England set-up in recent weeks, following the form of Manchester United youngsters Phil Jones (19), Tom Cleverley (22), Chris Smalling (21) and Danny Welbeck (20).

With the likes of Arsenal's Jack Wilshere (19) and Chelsea's Josh McEachran (18) waiting in the wings, there are signs that England's future may not be as bleak as it appeared after the humiliation in Bloemfontein 15 months ago.

Jones, Cleverley and Smalling are all part of the England squad for Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Bulgaria, and Welbeck and Wilshere would also have travelled had it not been for injury.

While England manager Capello was coy about whether any of Jones, Cleverley or Smalling would start, England captain Terry is convinced that the Manchester United trio would be ready if selected.

"They've come into the England set-up and felt very comfortable and very assured of themselves and rightly so," Terry said.

"They're huge talents, certainly for the present, and the future of the England team. They've got a lot to give.

"You don't get into the Man Utd side if you're not ready and they've shown that they are. I don't think age comes into it at all.

"You need to be given opportunities in life and if that comes around, good luck to them. They're certainly ready."

England are currently in pole position to qualify automatically from Group G, which they lead courtesy of a vastly superior goal difference from second placed Montenegro.

If England do reach next year's finals in Poland and Ukraine, Terry believes the side can travel to the tournament with confidence, offering a mix of experience and youth.

"If we do get ourselves to the Euros we can go there with some young players who have got an an awful lot of games under their belts, a little bit more experience and that mixture of the young and the old that we always speak about, and hopefully we can have a good tournament," Terry said.

Terry sensibly steered clear of comparisons to England's mythical "golden generation" however.

"I don't want to get into that. We've been there and done that before," he said. "What we are looking at is a very good young squad of players coming through. It's great to see for English football all round."

David Beckham has been ruled out of the World Cup after tearing his Achilles tendon during AC Milan's Serie A game with Chievo on Sunday. He is due to have an emergency operation in Finland either today or tomorrow, but these kinds of injuries can take 6 to 8 months to heal on a youngster. David is no spring chicken, poor lad. There was talk this morning that it could even signal the end of his career. That would be a devastating blow for him, as he was set to go to Africa and I think he may have gone on to beat Peter Shilton's appearance record. I can't see that happening now?

England will miss him in the World Cup.

Terry loses captaincy - Capello decides to axe Terry after Wembley summit - Sky Sports

Quote:The Football Association have confirmed John Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy following allegations over his private life.

Terry's future as skipper of his country has been the subject of intense speculation ever since allegations emerged that he had an affair with England team-mate Wayne Bridge's ex-girlfriend.

The Chelsea star met with England coach Fabio Capello at Wembley on Friday afternoon to discuss his future as captain in the wake of the reports.

There have been calls for Terry to lose the armband from sections of the media as it has been claimed more revelations are set to be exposed.

The FA made it clear Capello alone would decide Terry's fate and the Italian has decided to take the captaincy away from the 29-year-old.

Capello was aware the matter needed to be dealt with prior to his departure for Warsaw on Saturday ahead of Sunday's Euro 2012 draw and reports suggest the meeting only lasted 12 minutes as Capello delivered the bad news.

Best interest
A statement from Capello read: "After much thought, I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry.

"As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behaviour. However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad.

"What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice.

"John Terry was notified first.

"When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain and also named a third choice. There is no reason to change this decision.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the FA, particularly Lord David Triesman and Ian Watmore, for allowing me to make this decision in my own time and in the best interest of the team."

Replacements
Terry has received support from Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti with the Italian claiming it was business as usual for the club captain in training ahead of Sunday's clash with Arsenal.

The news throws England's plans for the World Cup into disarray with Capello now forced to look for a new captain for this summer's tournament in South Africa.

Sky Sports News understands Rio Ferdinand, who was overlooked for the job after Capello took charge in 2008, will assume the captaincy despite his injury problems this season.

Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney have also been mentioned as possible replacements, but it seems Ferdinand is set to take up the role.

Plans for a permanent training base for the England team have been revived by the Football Association.
The 330-acre National Football Centre in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, will be renamed St George's Park.
It will feature 12 pitches, including one synthetic and indoor, plus sports medicine and sports science facilities, two hotels and a conference centre.
England boss Fabio Capello said: "It will be an inspirational site for coaches and players to develop."
The scheme, which will fulfil a similar role to France's Clairefontaine and Coverciano in Italy, was first announced eight years ago.
Since then, the FA have sunk £25m into the project.
Capello added: "This is a much-needed facility and through my own experiences at Coverciano in Italy I understand the importance of the centre for England."
NFC chairman David Sheepshanks stated: "Our aim is to make St George's Park a sporting destination of choice for coaches, players, administrators and officials alike.
"In Wembley we have a world-class stadium and in St George's Park we have the place to inspire world-class performance."
The League Managers Association have committed to making the new centre their future headquarters.
The plans also include a private housing scheme for 30 homes near the entrance to the centre that will help plug a funding gap.

This cannot be a white elephant, and there is a robust business plan that makes this viable and sustainable
NFC chairman David Sheepshanks
Sheepshanks told a news conference in Burton: "We feel it is time the NFC had a new identity and we hope this name St George's Park will reflect the sense of national pride that will accompany the centre when it is open.
"Every single leading European country has a national football centre - even Bulgaria - and we are the only leading European country that does not.
"Every country that has won the World Cup has one apart from us."
Sheepshanks insisted, however, that the St George's Park development, which is being sponsored by Umbro, would not be a mere replica of other centres, and would not be a youth academy but would be a base for all England senior, junior and disability teams.
He added: "We are not here to replicate any one of the other centres, we have been to look at them and share best practices to pick up the best ideas to serve our needs.
"This is not a finishing school for young players, that role is carried out very well by the Premier League and Football League clubs.
"This is not an academy and is not in competition with our professional clubs."
There has been some opposition to the location of the centre so far from London but Sheepshanks said Burton was a central point for the whole country, and stressed that it would not be a financial burden on the FA.
"This cannot be a white elephant, and there is a robust business plan that makes this viable and sustainable," he added.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says England will not win next year's World Cup.

The Red Devils boss does not think the Three Lions have a chance of lifting the trophy in South Africa, and believes five-time winners Brazil will triumph once again.

Ferguson argued that the strength in depth of Brazil will see them through to glory, as they have so many players plying their trade in the UEFA Champions League.
"I can't see past Brazil, actually. They are going to be the ones in South Africa," he told the Mail on Sunday.

"They are going to be hard to beat. You just have to think of the players they can bring in - they are a supplier of great players.

"Last season, there were 103 Brazilians in the Champions League and only 15 Englishmen.

"More Scots played in the Champions League last season than English players. I thought the 11/10 on Brazil to beat England was the bet of the century.

"The small number of English players in the Champions League is down to the way the Premier League has developed."

Ferguson also questioned the effect the Premier League has on the English national team.

With the Three Lions having gone through a barren spell in major international tournaments, the United manager hopes to see more English talent emerging in the top flight.

"The eternal question is at what point the Premier League is going to have to feature more English players," he added.

"We are not too bad at this club in terms of young players coming through but Liverpool would struggle."
