Ferguson’s first-ever signing
#1
Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-ever signing cost him 100 pounds and he thought the player was overpriced with a five pound a week deal.

Ferguson said: “We had only eight players before the season started, so I got George Adams for 100 pounds and we overpaid. He was on five pound a week and I tell him he is the worst signing I ever made.

Can you guys imagine the money being spent these days on players compared to back in time like in 1974.

This was part of his speech at the League Managers' Association Hall of Fame dinner recently, where the LMA recognised the list of managers who had reached the 1,000 domestic league and cup matches.

He went on to moan about the pampered players, the influence of agents and much more.

As for George Adams, I should think he would be pretty chuffed that SAF remembered his first ever signing, despite the joke at his expense.

The story is:

Ferguson told of how he had started in management at East Stirling with eight players and no goalkeeper two weeks before the start of the season, and promptly went out and signed his first player, George Adams, who cost £100. "I overpaid," said Ferguson with a chuckle.

For the whole story, go to:

Where you can read about his worst signing, poor old Ralph Milne, who never settled at United, after a promising career at Dundee United; how he feels about the press and a few other bits.

I'd think an evening with SAF would be so very interesting!

But it was about 1974 - way before you were born! Things were much cheaper then! The world was gripped in a massive recession (sound familiar?) and two examples the 'net comes up with are that the Average House Price was £10,990 and a Gallon (anyone remember gallons?) of Petrol cost 42p!

Maybe he feels that you stole his thunder in the second post so went off and changed his allegiance.
Now he's got the 'Blues'.
