Since making his senior Reds debut in a goalless home draw against West Ham United on 5 December 2015, Varela has made a total of 10 starts for the first team. He also scored the dramatic title-clinching goal for the Under-21s last season against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
The South American has previously enjoyed a season away from Old Trafford with Real Madrid's Castilla side following his move to Manchester from Uruguayan club Penarol in the summer of 2013
