BBC said he's not in the squad of 25 either. Sky and BBC are pretty trustworthy I guess. Sad to hear

cant help but think that he might never play again...
because, what if he has lost the love for the game? cantona anyone?
it will be a big blow, like losing a player in the transfer market and get nothing with it...

Bit of wishful thinking for Hargo

Hargreaves could make run-in
Fergie hoping midfielder will return this season

Sir Alex Ferguson has refused to rule out the possibility of Owen Hargreaves making a comeback this season.

The combative midfielder has not figured for Manchester United since 2008, with a succession of knee problems keeping him on the sidelines.

The long-standing injury dates back to his time with Bayern Munich, but it is hoped that the revolutionary surgery he underwent in America will help to rid him of the complaint.

The 29-year-old has undergone a lengthy period of rehabilitation under the watchful eye of renowned knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman and recently returned to Manchester from the States.

Initially, it was hoped that Hargreaves would be back in action by November, ready to aid United's quest for glory and stake a claim for a place in Fabio Capello's World Cup plans.

Slow progress

However, he remains some way off a first-team return and has been left out of the Red Devils' squad for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.
Ferguson insists he had no choice but to overlook the England international on this occasion, but claims Hargreaves could come back into contention before the 2009/10 campaign draws to a close.

"Owen's recovery is slow," he said.

"It is a year-and-a-half now and I can't put a time on it. But he will be back.

"He could come back and make an impact on the league for us. Hopefully he does."

i would be pleasantly surprised to see Hargreaves pull on a United shirt in the Premiership again , trouble is Fletcher has come on a bomb since Hargreaves fell lame and with our current formation you cant play both of them at the same time , we need an attacking option as well . Superb for United and England before , but can he regain form and fitness ........ i really dont know

After the news that Hargo was dropped from the Champions League squad, SAF has gone on record saying that he feels Owen could make the World Cup squad!!

(I know, this kind of should be under Internationals, but it's about his fitness battle, too)

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Owen Hargreaves could still force his way into Fabio Capello's World Cup squad.

The Manchester United and England midfielder has not played in the past 18 months after undergoing surgery in a bid to cure tendinitis in both his knees.

Red Devils boss Ferguson elected to leave the former Bayern Munich man out of his UEFA Champions League squad this week.

But he still believes that Hargreaves can get enough football under his belt before the end of the campaign to earn an international recall for the finals in South Africa.

"Owen could still be an important player for England," said Ferguson.

"It is not like Ledley King. If he comes back the confidence would come back. If he started playing the confidence would be the key factor."

Hargreaves has not played for United since September 2008, when he finally decided to undergo revolutionary knee surgery in American to try to cure a chronic tendinitis problem that dates back to his time at Bayern Munich.

The 29-year-old eventually returned to United's Carrington training base 12 months later after undergoing an extensive rehabilitation programme under the guidance of world renowned knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman.

At the time, it was thought Hargreaves would be back in action by November but that deadline was missed and so have others Ferguson subsequently put in place.

Yet Ferguson insists the bad news need not necessarily prove terminal and that Hargreaves could still play a major role this season.

"Our physios are doing their best and sometimes we feel he is almost there, then it seems to be slow again," he said.

"But I am confident he will be back before the end of the season.

"The biggest incentive should be to get back into our team but if at the end of it there is the carrot of being in the World Cup then I will be happy with that."

RE: HARGO BACK!!!
This would be awesome if it actually happens. Don't hate me but the only football shirt I've ever owned was a Hargo Bayern Munich jersey!

Noucamp99:

This is great news, although, if you looked at the bench today, there was Obertan, Park and Fletcher, while we have Giggsy injured and Nani, Valencia, Carrick, Gibson and Scholes on the pitch. I think a gentle run in for Hargo to the end of the season, with no pressure and we'll see him next year.
