Hargreaves return on hold

Owen Hargreaves will not take part in the Reserves' Manchester derby on Thursday evening.

Last week it was reported that the midfielder would make his long-awaited return from injury when Manchester City travelled to Altrincham's Moss Lane on 11 March.

But the game, a top-of-the-table league clash, doesn't tally with Hargreaves' precise rehabilitation schedule.

A club spokesperson told ManUtd.com: "This definitely isn't another injury setback. It just doesn't fit in with Owen's training schedule."

But while Hargreaves, who hasn't played since September 2008, won't feature, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to name a strong team, despite the game coming just three days after the Reserves beat Stockport County 1-0 in the Manchester Senior Cup.

Now saying he should be playin in next reserve fixture!

Fergie - Owen ready to play
United boss expects midfielder to feature in next game

Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Owen Hargreaves is ready to return to action with Manchester United's reserve side.

The England international was due to end his near-18 month absence following surgery on both knees in a second string meeting with Manchester City on Thursday night.

But Old Trafford officials revealed on Wednesday that the midfielder would not feature, as the scheduled fixture interfered with his training regime.

Ferguson has now moved to clarify the situation, explaining that Hargreaves in fact went to see a specialist for the latest update.

Ready

And with the verdict positive, Ferguson believes an end to the 29-year-old's lengthy spell on the sidelines is in sight.

"Owen went to see a specialist yesterday (Thursday)," said the United boss.

"There is nothing wrong and the idea is for him to play in the next game.

"He has to play in the next game because he is ready to play."

United's reserve side is next due in action on Thursday, when they entertain Burnley at Altrincham's Moss Lane ground.

as soon as he can get back to reserves football and getting used to it, he can get back into the first team, he is a class defensive mid, and hes good at freekicks, scored a beauty against arsenal i think. he still has some years left in him.

Hargo has played in the reserve game Smile

Hargreaves back in action
Injury-plagued midfielder on the mend after 45-minute reserve show

Owen Hargreaves made his long-awaited return to action in a Manchester United reserves game against Burnley.

The midfielder has not played a first-team game since featuring against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in September 2008 through problems with tendinitis in both knees.

However, a 45-minute outing for the reserves against Burnley at Altrincham on Thursday is a step in the right direction for the Canadian-born former Bayern Munich player.

Hargreaves was reluctant to reach fifth gear in the match but came through a half unscathed with few tough tackles from the opposition.

United paid Bayern £17million for his services in 2007, but injuries have limited the one-time England international to just 37 competitive appearances for the club.

He looked OK. Only 45 minutes, but he actually looked quite fit and sharp.
