Rooney facing four weeks out
United and England striker suffers sprained ankle

Wayne Rooney is facing between two and four weeks on the sidelines with a sprained ankle, Sky Sports News understands.

The Manchester United and England talisman had the nation holding their breath as he crumpled in a heap on the turf at the Allianz Arena in the closing seconds of the 2-1 UEFA Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich.
Rooney, who had bagged his 34th goal of an astonishing season with just 64 seconds on the clock in the quarter-final first leg meeting, had to be helped from the field and later left the stadium on crutches.

Replays of the incident showed he had turned his right ankle when he landed awkwardly, causing immediate concern for Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson and England counterpart Fabio Capello.

The fears of the national team appear to be have been alleviated by the initial prognosis, but the Red Devils will be without their attacking ace for a significant spell during the title run-in.

Ferguson's men, who head the Premier League by one point from Chelsea, play host to their title rivals at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime in what could well prove to be a pivotal moment in the season.

The return leg of their European showdown with Bayern follows next Wednesday when United know they must score if they are to progress to the semi-finals of the competition.

Rooney can expect to miss the trip to Blackburn on 11th April and may also struggle to be involved in the Manchester derby with City at Eastlands the following weekend and the home meeting with Spurs on 24th April.

That would leave the 24-year-old with just the Premier League encounters against Sunderland and Stoke to regain match sharpness in domestic action before attention turns to England's World Cup bid in South Africa.

Who cares what the nation thinks??? All they keep banging on about is the World Cup!! Well, feck them, I say. Rooney is a Manchester United player and it is our season that is the primary concern and not what happens in 70-odd days!

I think that 4 weeks is the best we could have hoped for, when you look at the way he reacted straight after it happened. What bad timing. Time for Berba, Diouf and Kiko to step up and be counted.

It really bugged me this morning on SSN, as they were going on and on about England's chances in the WC being dented, especially if Wazza is not fit. Like England realistically stand a chance!! Back in the real world, there is the small matter of the club that employs him and the team that he loves missing him for 4 weeks at the most crucial time of the season. OK, so accidents do happen and we will cope, but it will give a massive lift to chelski and bayern.
United 1st for me and England last. Club over country every time!

Rooney was carried off with a sprained ankle during Everton's friendly with Rangers at Ibrox after an apparently harmless challenge with Bob Malcolm. Everton feared he would be out for four weeks and miss the start of the season, but he came on as a substitute against Arsenal on the opening day


29 March 2004: sprained ankle

Rooney injured his ankle against Middlesbrough at Goodison and appeared to aggravate it during England's 1-0 friendly defeat in Sweden the following Wednesday. The injury resulted in him missing two weeks of action for Everton


24 June 2004: metatarsal

Having starred for England throughout Euro 2004 in Portugal, Rooney limped off during their quarter-final against the hosts. It was later confirmed Rooney had cracked his fifth metatarsal and would be out for eight weeks, but he did not make his return until the end of September


April 29 2006: metatarsal

With just six weeks until England's World Cup opener against Paraguay, Rooney was carried off with a fractured metatarsal bone in his right foot after an innocuous challenge from Chelsea's Paulo Ferreira. The initial prognosis said he would definitely miss the group stages, if not the whole tournament – but Rooney featured in all but one of England's matches


August 12 2007: metatarsal

Rooney broke a metatarsal for the third time in three years – this time his left foot – when Reading's Michael Duberry inadvertently stamped on his foot. Tests confirmed Rooney had suffered a hairline fracture which he returned from slightly earlier than the six-to-eight weeks originally diagnosed


November 9 2007: sprained ankle

Barely a month after returning from his third metatarsal injury, Rooney injured his ankle in training and left Manchester United's Carrington training ground on crutches. The striker made his return on schedule a month later, but missed England's crucial Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia


October 1 2008: sprained ankle

Rooney limped off against the Danish side AaB Aalborg with an injured ankle, with Sir Alex Ferguson unsure of the severity of the injury but rating him doubtful for the Blackburn match three days later. Rooney started and scored at Ewood Park


March 30 2010: sprained ankle

A tangle with Bayern Munich's Mario Gómez left Rooney crumpled on the ground – replays show he inflicted damage to his right ankle. The striker was helped off by the United physio and left the ground on crutches with a protective cast over the foot

I think we started to prove doubters wrong last weekend without Rooney. Hopefully that will continue. Though we all know Chelsea's match will prove to be more difficult than the Bolton one.
