  Ibrahimovic Next Move?
Posted by: WatchMUFC - 09-07-2009, 12:39 PM - Forum: Transfer Talk - Replies (14)

Sir Alex Ferguson is weighing up a move for Inter Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Manchester United boss Fergie, who yesterday completed the £3.5million signing of Bordeaux winger Gabriel Obertan, has missed out on several of his top targets to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.

Lyon striker Karim Benzema opted to join Real Madrid, while Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery revealed his desire to play in La Liga.

That has left Fergie with limited options in terms of finding a forward to supply the goals without Ronaldo - despite the free signing of former England striker Michael Owen.

Now Inter striker Ibrahimovic, 27, has emerged as a target, with Fergie having had the Sweden international watched on several occasions last season by his European scouts.

Inter would be reluctant to sell £30mrated Ibrahimovic, twice voted Serie A Player of the Year, but sources in Italy suggest they may be persuaded by a sizeable fee.

France Under-21 star Obertan signed a four-year deal as Fergie said: "Gabriel is a player we've tracked for a few years now. We're delighted to get him now as he's an exciting new prospect."

Obertan said: "I'm very happy to join United. This is a big opportunity for me to play at such a great club. I'm very excited to be here."

  United Sign Obertan
Posted by: WatchMUFC - 08-07-2009, 11:08 PM - Forum: Transfer Talk - Replies (100)

Sir Alex Ferguson has made Bordeaux's Gabriel Obertan United's third signing of the summer, after the promising young Frenchman signed a four-year deal at Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old's contract keeps him at Old Trafford until at least June 2013, and Sir Alex revealed Obertan, who can play in a variety of attacking positions, is a player whose progress he has followed for some time.

"Gabriel is a player we have tracked for a few years now, but because of his educational programme our efforts to get him here have always been delayed," the Reds boss told ManUtd.com.

"We are delighted to get him now as he is an exciting prospect. We like to get young players and develop them, and we will see that in Gabriel over the next two years."

Gabriel admits he jumped at the chance to join the Barclays Premier League champions.

“I am very happy to join Manchester United," he told us. "This is a big opportunity for me to play at such a great club. I am very excited to be here and I look forward to proving what I can do."

However, the club has confirmed that due to a slight injury which needs attention, Gabriel will not travel on the pre-season tour.

Foster Gets New 4 Year Deal
Posted by: WatchMUFC - 07-07-2009, 03:34 PM - Forum: Man Utd News - Replies (24)

United goalkeeper Ben Foster has agreed terms on a new four-year contract with the club.

Foster, 26, battled with Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak for the keeper's jersey throughout last season but was hampered by injuries.

And despite admitting that a lack of first-team football could compromise his international prospects, Foster has chosen to stay at Old Trafford.

"I'm really happy to commit my future to the club," he said.

"The team spirit here is fantastic and working along side Edwin and Tomasz has been a great influence on my career."

Foster made nine appearances for the Reds during last season's campaign, including a brilliant performance in the penalty shoot-out victory over Tottenham in the Carling Cup final.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson added: "We are delighted that Ben has signed a new four-year deal.

"Ben is seen as one of the best young goalkeepers in England and we genuinely see him as a successor to Edwin van der Sar."

Foster, who is considered a potential England number one, had surgery on a ruptured thumb ligament in May which ruled him out for the final month of last season.

That meant the twice-capped England international missed the Champions League final against Barcelona and the World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra in June.

Foster, who missed most of the 2007/08 season following cruciate ligament surgery, has been unfortunate with injuries having also suffered an ankle ligament injury just a few weeks into last season.

The goalkeeper joined the club in July 2005 from Stoke but spent two seasons on loan at Watford.
