Quote:Manchester United were busy in the summer 2016 transfer window as Jose Mourinho shaped the squad for his first season in charge of the Reds.
The new boss made four stellar signings with Eric Bailly being his first capture, from Villarreal, to reinforce the defence. Zlatan Ibrahimovic followed on 1 July, sealing a Bosman free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan completing his move from Borussia Dortmund on a four-year deal, with a view to a further 12 months. Of course, the club announced the blockbusting deal to buy Paul Pogba from Juventus on 8 August.
On the outgoing front, four players were released by the Reds at the end of the season. Spanish goalkeeper Victor Valdes joined Middlesbrough with the newly-promoted Teessiders beating off competition for his signature. Another keeper, George Dorrington, signed for Huddersfield Town following a successful trial, while Oliver Rathbone linked up with Rochdale on a free transfer. The fourth player released, Nick Powell, also got fixed up after rejoining Wigan Athletic on a four-year contract.
Three other departures were confirmed on 12 July - Tyler Reid joined Swansea City, Ashley Fletcher departed for West Ham and Joe Rothwell signed for Oxford United. A day later, Irish defender Jimmy Dunne linked up with Burnley and goalkeeper Oliver Byrne's move to Cardiff City was confirmed.
A first loan exit was agreed when Uruguayan full-back Guillermo Varela accepted a season-long switch to Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany while Adnan Januzaj agreed a temporary move to Sunderland with Paddy McNair and Donald Love joining David Moyes' Black Cats on a permanent basis. James Wilson also left on loan, to join Derby County for the season with Cameron Borthwick-Jackson following suit a couple of days later, to Wolves.
Tyler Blackett left for Reading to link up with ex-Reds defender Jaap Stam and Andreas Pereira agreed to spend the season with Spanish outfit Granada, before Will Keane departed permanently to Hull City.
On deadline day, Dean Henderson joined League Two club Grimsby Town on loan until January and fellow goalkeeper Joel Castro Pereira made a season-long move to Belenenses in Portugal. Between those deals, James Weir followed Under-21s team-mate Keane in signing a three-year contract with Mike Phelan's Hull City.

Federico Macheda?
Italian striker Federico Macheda, who has had his Cardiff contract terminated my mutual agreement, had been at the Bluebirds for just over two years.
The former Manchester United man, 25, scored eight times in 2014-15 but did not find the net once last season in eight appearances for Cardiff and three during a loan spell with Nottingham Forest.
Cardiff head coach Paul Trollope had said Macheda was not part of his plans.
"We would like to thank Federico for his contribution and wish him the very best for his future," Cardiff said in a statement.
