United keeper Edwin van der Sar has been given indefinite compassionate leave to visit his ill wife in the Netherlands.
Annemarie van Kesteren, 36, suffered a brain haemorrhage on 23 December.
"Annemarie had a problem over in Holland a week ago and has been admitted to hospital," said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
"That is the best place for her to be. They have examined her twice and are trying to get to the root of it."
Van der Sar, 39, has not played since suffering a knee injury in United's 3-0 win over Everton on 21 November.
And the Dutchman has been told to take as long as he needs before returning to play for United.
"I have told Edwin to stay over there. There is no point in him being here," added Ferguson.
"The best thing is for him to be with his wife. Hopefully she will make a good recovery."
Van der Sar had been in his homeland to receive treatment from the Holland team doctor for his knee injury when his wife collapsed.

United offer Nani to Benfica to lure Angel Di Maria - Report |

Manchester United winger Nani could soon be on his way home to Portugal, with the Red Devils apparently set to offer the player to Benfica as part of a potential deal to bring Angel di Maria to Old Trafford.
The Guardian reports that Nani himself has asked his agent to look for clubs in Italy or Spain rather than Portugal, though, as he has no interest in going back to his homeland.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to be very concerned about Nani's form and feels that there is little future for the Portuguese at the club.
Benfica are reportedly not keen to lose Argentine international Di Maria, widely viewed as one of the world's most promising forwards, unless one of his suitors coughs up £30 million.
Manchester City are also believed to be courting the 21-year-old Argentine.
