How was the fixture list formed? The common perception is that a mysterious computer randomly draws each fixture but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, it is actually the product of a detailed process that involves the scheduling of 2,036 matches across the top four divisions in England.

The compilation of the list is a joint venture between the Premier League, the Football League and an international IT services company called Atos Origin. Confused? Well, here are some answers....

When does the process start? Work begins at the start of the calendar year when FIFA and UEFA release their schedules for international matches. Premier League games are then slotted around those dates, as well as scheduled matches for European club competitions and the FA Cup.

What are the golden rules? In any five matches there has to be a split of three home matches and two away, or the other way around. A team will never have more than two home or away matches in a row and, wherever possible, a team will be home and away either side of an FA Cup tie. A club will never start or finish the season with two home or away matches and, over the festive period, a team that is at home on Boxing Day will always be away on New Year's Day, or vice versa.

Can United and City both play at home? The short answer is no. Most clubs have a partner club who they cannot clash with due to the close proximity of stadiums. Obvious examples are United and City, or Liverpool and Everton, but it becomes trickier in London due to the number of clubs.

Do the clubs have a say? In March, each club receives a letter that requires them to answer three questions: Are there any dates they wish not to be at home, which club do they want to be paired with and are there are any teams they do not desire to play at home on Boxing Day? The Premier League cannot fulfil all requests but claim to satisfy higher than 85 per cent each season.

How much is random? Once the international calendar has been considered, and each club's requests, the fixtures computer defines which dates each team will be at home and away before randomly attributing an opponent to each date. If there are any problems, then the whole process is restarted. For example, at the start of the 2012/13 season, there was a requirement from the Police not to play high-profile matches until after 8 September because of the Olympics and Paralympics. This season, the fixtures for the Rugby World Cup at some Premier League grounds in Autumn has added another factor to consider.

Are travel times taken into account? The Premier League claims there is a conscious effort to prevent clubs from the same area travelling on the same train lines on the same day. They also make an effort to minimise travel on Boxing Day and New Year's Day, when public transport is limited.

Who approves the fixture list? The Premier League, the Football League and Atos representatives all review the completed list over a two-day period, ensuring as many club requests as possible have been granted. It is still possible to rotate fixtures during this time, although altering just one match can have massive ramifications and may require 40 other changes across the top four divisions.

The fixtures will be shown here later today

  CONFIRMED: United Release Five Players
Posted by: Noucamp99 - 11-06-2015, 11:39 AM - Forum: Transfer Talk - No Replies

Ben Amos, Tom Cleverley, Callum Evans, Ryan McConnell and under 21 team captain, Thomas Thorpe have all been released by Manchester United.

Manchester United are releasing five players this summer, including Tom Cleverley who has already agreed to join Everton on 1 July, after the club's retained list was submitted to the FA Premier League.

Goalkeeper Ben Amos is also leaving the club after making seven senior appearances for the Reds. The 25-year-old spent time with Bolton Wanderers on a loan basis last season and enjoyed seven years as a professional at Old Trafford.

Under-21 captain Tom Thorpe, who lifted numerous trophies at youth level during his stay at the club, is free to move on after making more appearances than any of his colleagues for Warren Joyce's title-winning side last term.

Fellow defenders Callum Evans and Ryan McConnell, who were also part of the Under-21 squad, are others to be heading to pastures new over the course of the summer.

Are You an Aspiring George Best?
Posted by: Noucamp99 - 26-05-2015, 11:35 AM - Forum: Man Utd News - No Replies

Quote:A search is under way for a young footballer to play Manchester United legend George Best in a film about his life.

Film producer Stephen Evans said he hoped to find a talented player in Northern Ireland who could portray the "genius" Best.

Last year, rising Spanish junior golfer José Luis Gutiérrez, 15, got to play his idol Seve Ballesteros in the acclaimed movie Seve, produced by Mr Evans.

He told BBC World Service programme Sportshour that he hoped to do something similar with Best.

"It took me about a year to find a young Seve to play him - in the end, I did but it took me a long time," he said. "The plan is literally starting in a couple of weeks' time, to find a young Northern Irish boy who can play the young Best between about 11 and 17."

"What we want to do then is unravel, if you like, the childhood and youth of George Best, and exactly where he came from and how he did what he did."

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players to have graced British and world football, Best died in November 2005 at the age of 59.

Mr Evans, whose film credits include The Madness of King George, said he wanted to capture what Best's life was like before he was catapulted to major stardom at an early age after leaving his home city of Belfast.

"Don't forget that, having gone to Manchester at the age of 15, at 22 he was the European footballer of the year, and probably at that point the most recognised footballer on the planet," he said.

The leap from Best's humble beginnings to his almost unprecedented fame at the heart of the "swinging 60s" and being dubbed the "fifth Beatle" is something Mr Evans says he wants to explore.

"He had a shy background and he didn't get a lot help from Manchester United because no-one really understood that this is a new thing that's happening," he said.

But what about the ideal candidate to play the young Best?

"We're going to Belfast and we'll be saying to all the very good young footballers in Northern Ireland, do you want to come and interview through your football skills for the job?"

He jokingly added: "He is a legendary genius, so I would think if they're not mad on George Best I'd tell them not to turn up."

NUFC Launch New Shirt With Sponsor’s Old Logo

WHOOPS!!!

Newcastle United launched its new home shirt on Tuesday morning - and it was out of date even before it was revealed. The lender relaunched itself on Monday - but it came too late for the new Newcastle kit, which fans have accused of being "out of date"

The Puma made Magpies kit, which is available for pre-order ahead of going on sale on Thursday, is set to be worn by the team in their Survival Sunday showdown with West Ham.

But only hours before its unveiling sponsor Wonga relaunched itself with a new logo, leaving no time for the club to make changes, and so the shirts will have to carry the old branding.

A spokesman for Wonga said the that due to the lead time required to make the thousands of replica kits the club hopes fans will buy the company and the club had been unable to put the new logo on the shirts.

“It was due to the production schedule,” she said.

Fans took to social media to ridicule the seemingly embarrassing blunder.

“Only NUFC could launch a new shirt with an outdated sponsor logo on it,” said True Faith podcaster Taylor Payne.

The new kit, which goes on sale from 9am on Thursday, sees “a hint of blue, matching the scroll under the famous Newcastle United crest” added to the famous black and white stripes - though supporters have also been quick to point out that it is also the colour of the loan company’s logo.

The sleeves are predominantly white and feature a new “formstripe” design, which removes a traditional shoulder seam “to improve the fit and allow unrestricted movement,” the club said.
