The Serbia defender has enjoyed a hugely successful career at Old Trafford since joining from Spartak Moscow in 2006, helping the club win a string of trophies.

But Vidic's contract runs out in the summer and he will seek out a fresh challenge, with Inter Milan thought to be favourites to sign the 32-year-old.

Injuries have restricted Vidic's appearances in recent years and he featured in just 23 games last season, but the centre-back has been a regular starter in United's defence this campaign.

"I'm not considering staying in England as the only club I ever wanted to play for here is Manchester United and I was lucky enough to be part of this club for so many years."

He becomes the latest long serving player to announce their departure and it remains to be seen if he will be followed by Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs, who are all out of contract in the near future.

A statement from Vidic on Manchester United's official website read: "I never could have imagined winning 15 trophies and I will certainly never forget that fantastic night in Moscow, memories that will live with me and the fans forever.

"However, I have decided that I will move on at the end of this season. I want to challenge myself again and try to make the best of myself in the coming years.

"I'm not considering staying in England as the only club I ever wanted to play for here is Manchester United and I was lucky enough to be part of this club for so many years.

"I've got a few options to move on and I will choose the right one for me and for my family.

"I am now going to focus all my efforts on playing for Manchester United and do the best I can for the team until the end of the season.

"I hope this stops any further speculation about my future."

well another defeat for us-8 this season so far and 4th place getting further away.
A lot made of why the manager brought Welbeck on instead of Fletcher, and also the fact we lost 2 central defenders and didn't have any on the bench, ok Rafa came on and Smalling was able to be moved in. but we look dodgy at the back-every time teams come at us. Evra was poor today-not a problem going forward-but he's a defender!!!

How's it going Reds!? I live in Northern Ireland and get over to the Theatre of dreams when I can, I've supported United for 30 odd years! I've never known anything else - GGMU!!! Favourite current player? Would probably be Wayne Rooney- just hope he signs this deal, and comes out and tells the fans he wants to become an all-time United Legend!!!!!

I'm Georg from Austria and I'm a United since i was 10 years old (1999 Against Bayern)!
Since 2007 (after the 7-1 against roma) i'm really fanatical about united and i watched every game on television; but that was not enough!
I had to see a live match and finally in december 2008 i saw my first match at old trafford vs. Middlesbrough!
This day changed my life... Since then i have been at 52 live games. I had some fantastic moments at Old Trafford: My favorite moment has to be Rooneys overhead kick! The best game i saw was the 8-2 vs. Arsenal; it was just brilliant!
The best atmosphere was against Real Madrid last March also if we went out at the end it was a memorable night.
But nothing was as great as Sir Alex last game at Old Trafford! It was just legendary! Im so happy that i saw that live!
